Peter Dews, M.D., M.S., FACP
Peter Dews, M.D., M.S., FACP, Class of 1986, is a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist affiliated with Ascension Michigan Providence Hospital, and a clinical associate professor of Medicine at the Wayne State University School of Medicine.
A first-generation college student from Detroit, he earned a bachelor’s degree in Microbiology from the University of Michigan, then entered Wayne State University when a counselor asked him if he had ever considered enrolling in medical school. He was accepted into the Wayne State University School of Medicine’s Post-Baccalaureate Program, and then matriculated into the School of Medicine.
After earning his medical degree, Dr. Dews completed his residency training in Internal Medicine at WSU/Detroit Medical Center, and then joined the faculty. He later earned a master’s of science degree in Clinical Research Design and Statistical Analysis at the University of Michigan Rackham School of Graduate Studies, and completed a certificate program in Health Services Research through the Association of American Medical Colleges.
He is a founding director of the Medical Office of Special Programs at the School of Medicine, and assisted the Department of Internal Medicine in developing programs directed at increasing residents and faculty from groups underrepresented in medicine. He later accepted a position at Wright State University in Ohio and then entered private practice in a medically underserved area in Jackson, Miss.
He has served as a chief medical officer for the St. Joseph Mercy (Trinity Health) System and as chief medical officer/senior clinical official for the Veterans Integrated Service Network 10, the second largest and most complex VISN in the Veterans Health Administration. In that role, Dr. Dews was accountable for oversight of the provision of health care to more than 500,000 veterans, as well as medical education and research across the network’s 11 medical centers and 58 community-based outpatient clinics in Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. He also has served as the senior research associate for Ford Motor Co.’s world headquarters in Dearborn, Mich. His expertise spans clinical and academic medicine, scientific research, rural health, program evaluation methods, health care administration, quality management and physician development.
Dr. Dews works with Ascension Providence Hospital in Southfield, Mich., in teaching, clinical and administrative capacities. He mentors middle school students with a focused outreach to underrepresented minorities and aspiring medical students.
