Resources
The Wayne State University School of Medicine employs a number of offices to provide resources to ensure that students feel welcome, heard and represented. Our goal is to do everything possible to ensure your success as a physician-in-training.
Office of Diversity and Inclusion
The School of Medicine's Office of Diversity and Inclusion is committed to creating and sustaining an educational and professional environment that is free of all forms of harassment and discrimination, including a diverse student body and faculty that embraces the goal of a genuine sense of belonging for everyone. The office oversees the acclaimed Post Baccalaureate Program, dedicated to helping students from traditionally underrepresented groups in medicine pursue successful medical careers. The office is a space where students may walk in and share. Staff members are trained as active listeners and support all students, with special training in Ally support for LGBTQIA+ inclusivity and advocacy.
Office of Financial Aid
The Office of Student Financial Aid offers various types of financial aid, tailored to each student's needs. The financial aid program includes scholarships, grants, loans and work-study programs to assist with school costs. Additional information can be found on the School of Medicine scholarships page.
Office of Student Affairs
The Office of Student Affairs provides students with a welcoming environment, timely and accurate advising and programs to enhance student wellbeing. From counseling and mentoring to assistance with housing, dining, transportation and life in the city of Detroit, the office is designed to help new students acclimate to the campus and medical education, and assist students throughout their medical education journey. Future Warrior M.D.s can also hear directly from medical students who have traveled the same path and ask them questions through our Warrior M.D. chats and events.
Office of Learning and Teaching
The Office of Learning and Teaching supports academic excellence for students across the four years of medical school. The staff includes two doctoral learning specialists with training in education and communication dedicated to preparing physicians with a lifelong commitment to self-directed learning. This is accomplished through offering students a variety of workshops introducing evidence-based learning strategies. Learning Skills specialists also provide one-on-one academic advising and run programs dedicated to preparing students for both USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 exams.
Office of Alumni Affairs and the Medical Alumni Association
The School of Medicine's Alumni Association is a robust cadre of 24,000 highly-trained physicians and researchers who know firsthand and understand the journey you are about to begin. The alumni are among the school's strongest supporters, and thousands offer assistance and guidance to their younger colleagues through job shadowing, medical specialty lunches at which they share what to expect, mentoring and even hosting students traveling during residency interviews.
