John Carethers

John Carethers, M.D.

John Carethers, M.D., Class of 1989, is the John G. Searle Professor and chair of Internal Medicine, and the C. Richard Boland Distinguished University Professor of Internal Medicine and Genetics at the University of Michigan Medical School.

Elected to the Institute of Medicine in 2012, he received the Wayne State University School of Medicine Distinguished Alumni Award in 2015, and in 2016 was awarded Mastership in the American College of Physicians, the national organization of internists. He was named to the list of “1,000 Inspiring Black Scientists in America,” by Cell Mentor.

Dr. Carethers was recently elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences for recognition of significant contributions in scholarly and professional fields.

He completed a residency at the Harvard Medical School-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital in 1992 and a fellowship in Internal Medicine Gastroenterology with the University of Michigan Health System in 1995.
